We will be doing a long-distance retreat beginning next fall, reading the book, Stigmata: A Medieval Mystery in a Modern Age.
Stigmatists are those otherwise ordinary people who suffer spontaneous lesions on their hands and feet resembling the marks of Christ's crucifixion.
Originally limited to the Mediterranean region and the Roman Catholic church and effectively begun by St. Francis of Assisi, the "wounded" Christians are examined for the origin of their wounds, the temper of their lives (before and after wounding) and the nature of the events they are part of.

chap 1&2

I was surprised that so many people in our time have the Stigmata.  Without mucking the waters, I understand that the Church has to be careful, but the Jews had to be careful when Jesus was born...

My opinion about the psychosomatic or multiple personalities, WELL, I think a lot can be said of the power of the mind.  I also thought Ted Harrison didn't give enough credit to the spiritual...

From Sr. Margaret Mary, Chap 1 and 2

I believe the life of Christ continues in the members of His body, the Church, even to this day. One gift God gives is the stigmata to certain special people. The is gift of suffering as Christ suffered is very painful. Not surprisingly, the hierarchy of the Church uses extreme caution in judging such phenomena as of divine origin. The human mind is so complex; caution is used to determine if...

Chapter 2 also talks about multiple personalities. In some areas of thought, multilpe personalities could also mean demonic possession. One must be very careful.

Stigmata - Chapter 1

In response to guiding question #1... I was surprised to discover that the 20th century has seen stigmatics from churches other than the Roman Catholic Church. Isn't it interesting that women stigmatics outnumber men by a ratio of 7 to 1?

1. What surprised you the most in reading the general history about the Stigmata?
Many things surprised me since this is my first reading about the Stigmata! Some things that stick out, though are: that most are women and that it’s generally accepted from medical profession that wounds have appeared without any deliberate conscious...

*What surprised you the most in reading some of the general history about the Stigmata
--The fact that most who have received the Stigmata are Women-European-Catholics.
--also that the Stigmata can throw communities into a state of religious enthusiasm…a group experience of the Divine.

*Have you had any direct experience with someone who has the stigmata that you'd like to share?
No. It would...

Ok. Here are the answers to the guide questions, which are very good, by the way.

The thing that surprised me the most was there are so many people with it today.  I must be watching the wrong television...

I haven't had any direct contact.  I don't know what I would do if I came into contact with one in light of the way Ted Harrison talks about them.

My opion of...

I haven't really heard about people with the Stigmata either on the "news." Padre Pio is probably the major living person I was aware of.

Chapters 1-2 Stigmata Book Janet

Hi Janet! Great responses! And you've read the entire book! Wow! I see your point when you say most who study the Stigmata are non-Catholic because they are not raised learning about the Saints, etc. and so the Stigmata is not possible in their eyes. I started wondering if non-Catholics would believe in the Stigmata more if they were receiving it?? And why has God chose mostly Catholics to receive...

*What surprised you the most in reading some of the general history about the Stigmata?

There are so many stigmatics & they are all so different !!

*Have you had any direct experience with someone who has the stigmata that you'd like to share?

No, but I would be afraid of them.

*What is your opinion of the theories of the stigmata being psychosomatic or as a result of multiple personalities?...
